During the Go-Get Zero event in London, Uber announced that it will start rolling out an AI assistant powered by OpenAI’s GPT-4o for drivers in early 2025.

At launch, the AI assistant will only be available to drivers in the U.S. Its main purpose will be to help drivers answer questions related to EVs, such as the location of charging stations or which EV is the best to buy at the moment. The ability to handle more complex queries will be added in a future update in the same year.

The assistant will provide personalized answers based on the driver’s request, the city they are in, and any available government incentives. Drivers can access the AI assistant from the Uber driver app’s home screen.

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi mentioned that the assistant will receive regular updates to ensure it can be used in more scenarios. The company also plans to introduce a talkback feature to the AI assistant, which will allow drivers to communicate via text and voice, with the assistant responding in kind.

Transportation Companies Integrating AI Into Their Services

Uber is one of many transportation companies that have integrated AI into their services. Grab Holdings, the Southeast Asian ride-hailing and delivery specialist, announced a partnership with OpenAI earlier this year to enhance its app’s navigation and customer support.

Uber’s Commitment to Helping Drivers Fully Switch to EVs by 2040

The introduction of AI assistants to address drivers’ concerns about EVs is part of Uber’s larger goal of reducing emissions by 2040. The company has pledged approximately $800 million to support its driver partners in switching.

Uber has also announced an EV mentorship program to assist drivers in transitioning to EVs further. Experienced EV drivers can earn extra cash rewards and incentives by participating in this program and mentoring other drivers interested in learning more about the driving and ownership experience of an EV.

According to Uber, about 180,000 drivers in North America and Europe switch from gas/diesel vehicles to EVs monthly. In London specifically, around 30% of all miles driven on Uber are now electric.
